NOBLE CHURCH OF CHRIST

“THE CHURCHES OF CHRIST SALUTE YOU”- Romans 16:16

Our Lord’s Church is Unique

Much of Jesus’ ministry focused on preparing His disciples for life after His death, resurrection and ascension.  In some of the passages in the Gospels where He foretells His death and resurrection, it is often interpreted as relating to the establishment and growth of the church.  But in Matthew 16:18, Jesus made a specific prediction about building His church. “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it.”  He called His church “the kingdom” (Matt. 16:19). Therefore, the “church” and the “kingdom” in this sense, are the same.  His church wouldn’t be destroyed (Mt 16:18).  The Bible states that the church was part of God’s plan before the creation of the world. (Col. 1:13-20; Eph. 1:20-23).  It was according to the plan or purpose of God.

This kingdom was prophesied many years earlier through Daniel (Dan. 2:40-45; 7:13-14).  These sections describe a future kingdom that will never be destroyed and will replace earthly kingdoms. Daniel even gives us the time frame when it would be established.   We read about the fulfillment of these prophecies in Acts 2, on the day of Pentecost.   This is a pivotal event in the early history of the church since it marks the official beginning of the church’s mission to spread the good news of Jesus Christ to the world.   The church/kingdom was established with power.

I am heartbroken with what we are witnessing in the news lately. It is a direct contradiction to what we are taught in the Scriptures.  Jesus still has a majority of those who would oppose Him for their own agenda.  Their desire is to hold on to their power and prestige. But many are misled by their own ignorance (Hosea 4:6).  What we see in the news is not the church Jesus died for and established.  Many we see around the world are misguided and untaught.  That is why Jesus gave us the great commission.  We need to go seek and save those who are lost, willingly or unwillingly.

This Sunday, we will explore the reasons why the Lord’s church is unique.  We will learn how we can continue in His teachings, even though we are years past the establishment of the church on the day of Pentecost.  We simply need to use Scripture as our guide.  God has given us His expectations and requirements for acceptable worship.  This Sunday, as we gather, we will highlight the characteristics of the uniqueness of the church of Christ, and how they are still relevant even today.  Hope to see you!

In Christ,

Steve
