The author of Hebrews is adamant about exhorting his readers to continue steadfast in Jesus and the Word.
We have seen in the last couple of weeks God’s purpose and design why Jesus took on humanity and dwelt among us.
Jesus was fully man, but so much more than man! He was more than a prophet! He was even more than the angels! He was and is and will forever be, God. Even though He is God and has all power to create and mediate, He doesn’t manipulate our will. We are still responsible for our own salvation. He provides it, but we must be diligent to maintain it.
We can find these first four verses in chapter two very interesting, especially when they follow what has been written in chapter one. The author is intentionally pointing out the person of Jesus, how He is superior to the prophets and angles. This point is summed up in the statement, “for this reason, we must pay closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it.”
What had they heard? The next three verses tell us the words that they were to pay close attention to. All things pertaining to their salvation. Without belaboring this point, chapter one gives us Jesus’ credentials. Chapter two gives us His message.
Understand, the Hebrew Christians were taught the Word, and received it, now they must be anchored to it, like a boat is anchored in one place.
We are going to be looking this week as what may cause us to drift away from God and His salvation if we neglect to remain steadfast.
In Christ,
Steve
