NOBLE CHURCH OF CHRIST

“THE CHURCHES OF CHRIST SALUTE YOU”- Romans 16:16

Being a Disciple of Jesus Calls for Action

Before we continue with our study of the parables, I would like to take this time to thank you for all of your encouraging words and compliments last Sunday.  Your feedback is always welcomed because it gives me insight to see how well the messages are being received and understood.

I want to note, again, that parables are usually stories drawn from elements of everyday life that are common, easily recognized and usually symbolic of something else. This week’s message will cover three parables, all still explaining the kingdom of heaven.

The first two have to do with a sense of value and a proper response. The third parable has to deal with value and separation, much like the parable of the tares.

In the parable of the hidden treasure, the man stumbled upon it. This can be compared to the Samaritan women at the well.  When she met and conversed with Jesus, she realized He was the Messiah they were looking and waiting for.  Instantly, because of the joy she felt, she left her water pot and rushed back to the city to share her finding with people of the city.  Jesus was the treasure. (John 4:7-30).

In the parable of the great pearl the man went searching for it.  This parable can be compared to the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8:26-40. When he was taught about Jesus, he too, realized that he found the perfect pearl, the Truth, and he instantly asked what must he do to acquire this salvation.  He decided at that moment to put his own way of life to death, and was baptized and went on his way rejoicing.

This last parable of the drag net presents a different perspective on the kingdom of heaven. In this parable, Jesus likens the kingdom of heaven to a net cast into the sea, gathering all kinds of fish. Once the net is full, the fishermen pull it ashore, sorting the good fish into containers and discarding the bad ones.

This parable illustrates the idea of judgement and the final separation of the righteous from the wicked. The drag net represents the inclusive nature of the kingdom of heaven, which gathers individuals from all walks of life.  Jesus came into this world to seek and save those who were lost.  He sought us while we were helpless and ungodly. (Rom 5:8) Through His love He died for us (Rom 5:8).  However, the sorting process symbolizes the ultimate judgement, where the righteous are separated and rewarded, while the wicked are discarded.

The parables of the Hidden Treasure, the Pearl of Great Price and the Drag Net offer rich insights into the nature and demands of the kingdom of heaven.  They challenge us to recognize the immense value of the kingdom, to be willing to make sacrifices, to live righteously, and to respond with joy and urgency to the divine call.  Through these lessons, Jesus provides timeless lessons that continue to inspire and guide us, as believers, in our spiritual journey.

We will learn more about these parables this Lord’s Day.  I hope you can join us as we assemble to worship our awesome God.

In Christ,
Steve
