Thank you again for taking time to read these articles. Hopefully we are growing in our faith and leaving doubt behind as we worship together and share in these biblical truths. As mentioned last week, we moved on from Jesus teaching in parables to seeing Jesus in action as He performs these marvelous miracles.
Hopefully you can see the progression in Jesus moving from performing His mighty miracles and caring for the multitude to now focusing on the disciples. We noticed last week how the miracle of Jesus walking on the water had a direct impact, not only on Peter, but all who were in the boat. After this amazing event, the disciples acknowledged, for the first time, Jesus as God’s Son. Their lives would never be the same. What they experienced moved them from great fear and distress to a greater faith and peace.
I want to take us, now, back to the Sea of Galilee (called the Sea of Tiberias in our passage in John). But this time, the scene is AFTER the resurrection of Jesus. There were only a few disciples there. Peter, who was a fisherman by trade, decided to go fishing and the other disciples joined him. They went out in a boat but caught nothing all night. At dawn, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not recognize Him.
This week’s lesson from John 21:1-14 shows a contrast from when they were in the boat during the storm to when they encounter Jesus this time. The arrival of Jesus is one of great joy and excitement. Again, Jesus proves to the disciples who He is by performing an undeniable sign; having them cast their net on the right side of the boat and the miraculous catch of fish. The main point of this miracle is when one believes and obeys the Lord, he, or she, is blessed abundantly.
This week’s message will highlight several benefits of having that great faith—faith enough to be obedient and ultimately blessed. Once we come to understand Jesus is God’s Son, it will enhance our lives immensely. This message will create in us a faith that will enable us to change directions. It reinforces the message of hope, faith, and the enduring presence of Christ in the lives of believers. It will give meaning and purpose to our lives. I am excited to share this message of hope with each of you. My constant prayer is that we can all gather together in Jesus’ name this Sunday to hear more of our Lord’s teaching. Will you begin to prepare for this Lord’s Day by praying for me? Preparation and prayer are the beginnings of spiritual success.
In Christ, Steve
